Tel. No.: (202) 366-9550

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced a safety recall of certain Peg Perego USA, Inc., infant child seats.

Certain of the 14,087 Primo Viaggo infant car seats (Part Numbers CS00MU1MR41TF41 and CS00MU1MR41WD41), Primo Viaggo infant car seats with base (Part Numbers CS00US1BP41GS45, CS00US1BP41TV41, CS00US1NP41TR34, CS00US1PF41NF49, CS00US1PF41RA41, CS00US8BP53DV53, CS00US8BP53RS53, CS00US8BP53RU53, and CS00US8BP53SK13), Pliko Travel Systems (stroller bundled as a single product) (Part Numbers LV34USLBP41TV41, LV34USLRC41GS46, LV34USNBP53DV53, and LV34USNBP53SK13), and Primo Viaggo Systems (stroller bundled as a single product) (Part Numbers ST33USLBP41TV41, ST33USNBP53DV53, ST38USLPF41NF49, and ST38USNRU53NF45) manufactured between Feb. 1, 2001, and June 11, 2001, do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213, "Child Restraint Systems."

The latch mechanism on the left side of the child seat does not completely engage the latching rod of the seat base in the vehicle because a reinforcing bracket was improperly positioned during manufacturing. This can cause consumers to believe that the car seat is properly attached to the base when it may not be. In the event of a vehicle crash, the child seat can detach from the base, possibly causing serious injury or death to the child.

Owners can inspect and, if necessary, repair their child seats according to fairly simple instructions obtainable from Peg Perego. The inspection and repair should take only a few moments. Owners who have registered their child seats with Peg Perego will be notified by letter with the necessary instructions on how to perform the inspection and repair the seat. Other owners can obtain the instructions from Peg Prego USA toll-free at 1-877-737-3468, through their Internet web site at: http://www.perego.com/pages/recallcsintructions.htm, or by writing directly to Peg Perego USA, Inc., 3625 Independence Drive, Fort Wayne, IN 46808.

Consumers with questions about this or any other safety recall campaign should call NHTSA's toll-free Auto Safety Hotline, 1-888-327-4236. Consumers in the Washington, D.C., area should call 202-366-0123.
