The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) latest rollover resistance ratings and crash test results are now available on the agency's World Wide Web site: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/. This information is for the last of the 2001 and the first of the 2002 model year vehicles.
The following 2001 vehicles are rated for rollover resistance: Nissan Xterra 4x2 four-door utility, Pontiac Aztek 4x4 four-door utility, Dodge Dakota 4x4 Extended Cab Pickup, Chevrolet Astro Van, and the GMC Safari Van.
The following 2002 vehicles are rated for rollover resistance: Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x2 four-door utility, Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x4 four-door utility, Ford Explorer 4x2 four-door utility, Ford Explorer 4x4 four-door utility, GMC Envoy 4x2 four-door utility, GMC Envoy 4x4 four-door utility, Jeep Liberty 4x2 four-door utility, Jeep Liberty 4x4 four-door utility, Mercury Mountaineer 4x2 four-door utility, Mercury Mountaineer 4x4 four-door utility, Oldsmobile Bravada 4x2 four-door utility, and the Oldsmobile Bravada 4x4 four-door utility.
For frontal impact protection, the 2001 Nissan Maxima four-door and the Infiniti I30 four-door are rated as are the 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4 four-door utility and the Mercury Mountaineer 4x4 four-door utility.
For side impact, the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse two-door and the Subaru Forester 4x4 four-door utility are rated.
For rollover resistance, frontal impact, and side impact, the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) reports rollover resistance ratings and crash test results in a range of one to five stars, with five stars showing the best safety protection for vehicles. Frontal tests should be compared only within the same weight class.
