Joliet, Illinois (August 28, 2009) - - The cards did not fall Patrick Sheltra’s way in Menards pole by Ansell Friday afternoon at the Chicagoland Speedway. Sheltra’s first attempt to tackle the 1.5-mile speed plant in time trials was aborted when another car on his car final qualification lap spun in turns three and four which prompted Sheltra to slow his No. 60 Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge Charger and steer towards pit road to the attention of his Sheltra Motorsports team.
After a clear pass from ARCA, the team was allowed to switch back into qualifying mode with Sheltra retackling the track some 25 minutes later. During his first lap, Sheltra posted a time of 31.266 seconds at 172.712 miles per hour. The effort was the team’s fastest lap of the weekend.
To the team’s surprise, Sheltra shut the car off going into turn one and coasted into the garage area where he apologized to his crew led by former ARCA RE/MAX Series driver John Hayden for not posting a second lap run.
“I messed up,” Sheltra admitted. “I knew that the first lap was pretty good and I know it’s a common trend that your first lap is the fastest. I wasn’t thinking. I know everyone thinks we probably could have been better on our second lap and we might have been, can’t do anything about it now except make up for it in the race.”
He added, “the bright side is our Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge is a little snug but very drivable. We should have a good car for the race.”
The Indiantown, Florida native’s qualifying run is the second consecutive race at the Joliet, Illinois facility where his Grace Sheltra owned automobile will start inside the top-15. Last year, Sheltra started 14th and was running in the top-10 when the team was relegated to a 31st place finish because of mechanical failure.
This year Sheltra has 11 top-15 starts in 15 races with a worst qualifying run of 19th at Kentucky Speedway in July. The 23-year old phenom has started inside the top-10 for nine events so far in 2008 including last weekend’s fourth place start at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
Entering Chicagoland, Sheltra has 60 ARCA RE/MAX Series starts to his credit with one career victory at Salem Speedway (April 2009). During his ARCA tenure, Sheltra has accumulated 10 top-fives and posted 20 top-10 finishes. A third place qualifying effort at Rockingham Speedway (April 2009) is Sheltra’s best time trials efforts to date. He has controlled the ARCA field five times for 109 laps.
The Ansell Cut Protection 150 (150 miles / 100 laps) is the 15th of 21 events on the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. The ninth ARCA event held at Chicagoland Speedway is a two-day show. The field will take the green flag shortly after 5:30 p.m. today. The event will be televised live on SPEED with additional broadcast coverage available live through the ARCA Racing Network (ARN) online at arcaracing.com. All times are local.
