ARCA RE/MAX Series Race No. 17, Southern Illinois 100 DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, DuQuoin, Illinois
Race Information: Event: Southern Illinois 100, Monday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m. Local Time Track: DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Qualifying: Monday, September 7 at 11:00 a.m. Local Time; Track Length: 1.0-mile clay.
Toledo Recap: Patrick Sheltra finished 17th in Friday’s ARCA RE/MAX 200 at Toledo Speedway. After qualifying 15th, Sheltra was on the move and headed towards the front when a spin and the loss of reverse in the transmission cost the Sheltra Motorsports team three laps. An additional loss of a cylinder made a long night for the veteran team. Sheltra however was able to recover two of his lost laps thanks to the Aarons “lucky dog.”
Welcome To My Turf: Patrick Sheltra is no stranger to the dirt and for the sixth time in his ARCA RE/MAX Series career, Sheltra will return to the dirt in the ARCA RE/MAX Series gunning for win number two Sunday afternoon. Sheltra showcased his driving talent on the dirt competing in USAC and UMP late model events throughout the United States before making the transition to asphalt full time in 2007.
One Year Ago: After finishing sixth in his inaugural debut at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in 2007, Patrick Sheltra stepped up to the plate and delivered an awesome second-place finish behind nine time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel in last year’s Southern Illinois 100. At the time, the run tied Sheltra’s career-best finish as the Indiantown, Florida native also landed the runner-up position earlier in the year at Toledo Speedway.
All Camo-Out: For the second time since the season opener at Daytona International Speedway in February, the Sheltra Motorsports team will sport a different paint scheme for Monday’s Southern Illinois 100. The team will utilize the same paint scheme they ran with their Dodges last year which consisted of a very slick looking all-camouflage No. 60 entry. This weekend will mark the second time that marketing partner Buffalo Wings & Rings will be hoisted atop of the team’s popular layout arrangement. Sheltra ran the same scheme at the Illinois State Fairgrounds last month where he qualified a stout fourth before finishing third.
The Coach Takes A Race Off: Patrick Sheltra’s driving coach 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) champion Ted Musgrave will take a race off and enjoy the Labor Day holiday with his family in North Carolina. Musgrave will return to his coaching duties at the New Jersey Motorsports Park next weekend and for the remainder of the 2009 racing season.
NASCAR Nationwide Series Plans To Be Announced Soon: Sheltra Motorsports will announce their plans for the remainder of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) season in the near future. Sheltra made his third career NNS start and first of the season last month at Daytona International Speedway driving the No. 81 D.H. Griffin-Quality Turf Dodge Charger for MacDonald Motorsports.
Watcha Haulin?: Crew Chief John Hayden has elected to bring Sheltra Motorsports chassis number 7 to the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds this weekend. This is the same automobile the team participated with the Illinois State Fairgrounds last month and finished third. It’s also the same piece that Sheltra utilized to notch a runner-up finish at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in 2008. The team converted the former Dale Earnhardt, Inc. automobile to a Dodge Charger during the last year. It will be run for just the eighth time in the rising phenom’s career. Chassis number 5 will serve as the team’s back-up automobile. That former Joe Gibbs Racing entry is the same automobile that Sheltra rocketed to his first victory at Salem Speedway in April.
Points Check: After round 16 on the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule, Patrick Sheltra sits eighth in the championship standings accumulating 3350 points. Just 165 points separate Sheltra from the fifth position. The Indiantown, Florida native is 230 markers from the fourth spot. Car owner Grace Sheltra remains solidly in the top-10 in the car owner standings.
Patrick Sheltra ARCA Career At-A-Glance: Entering DuQuoin, Sheltra has 62 ARCA RE/MAX Series starts to his credit with one career victory at Salem Speedway (April 2009). During his ARCA tenure, Sheltra has accumulated 10 top-fives and posted 21 top-10 finishes. A third place qualifying effort at Rockingham Speedway (April 2009) is Sheltra’s best time trials efforts to date. He has controlled the ARCA field five times for 109 laps.

Sheltra Motorsports, DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Pre-Race Quotes: Patrick Sheltra, driver of the No. 60 Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge Charger:
On Toledo Speedway: “Toledo didn’t go as planned and that’s putting it lightly. We had great success there in 2008 and this year we couldn’t get a break. I guess that’s just racing.”
On DuQuoin State Fairgrounds: “We came up one position short last year at DuQuoin, I don’t want to do that again. It was a great race for Sheltra Motorsports but I want to put our Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge in victory lane and finally get a win on the dirt. I hope we can pull it off.”
On The Approaching Road Course Race: “I’m looking forward to going to New Jersey Motorsports Park this upcoming weekend. It’s just a neat place. We went and tested there in August and we’re pretty good. The guys made some changes to our home-made road course car so I’m looking forward to improving our 11th place run from there last year.”
On The Key To Winning At DuQuoin: “Tires is probably your biggest obstacle. We wore out our tires big time last year but luckily we had enough time to get back to the front. We had an aggressive setup last year but it worked. I think we’ll be fast from the moment we unload, I just can’t wait to get back on the dirt.”
On The Drive For Five: “Five races to go huh? We have the capabilities of being a contender in each of these final five races. We can win at Salem, I cannot wait to get back there. Kansas and Rockingham should be good races for us too. I’m just ready to race and put this Sheltra Motorsports team up front.”
Sheltra Motorsports, DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Pre-Race Quotes: Grace Sheltra, owner of the No. 60 Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge Charger:
On Toledo Speedway: “It’s disappointing that we couldn’t back up our performances from 2008 but I’m proud of the Sheltra team for never giving up Friday night. There was no doubt that the night could have turned out a lot worse than it did.”
On DuQuoin State Fairgrounds: “Patrick wants to win on Monday. There’s no doubt about that. I think we can without a doubt. The Sheltra Motorsports team proved at Springfield that we mean business on the dirt. I think we’ll back that statement up again on Monday.”
On The Drive For Five: “These final five races are going to come quick and then we have a couple NASCAR Nationwide Series races still in our lineup so we’re going to be busy but we’re looking forward to it. We want to win another one before the year’s out and I think we’ll accomplish that with no problem.”
