There has been a lot of buzz lately about a new technology that claims to allow anyone with a basic mechanical ability to convert a car or truck to run on water. With the price of gasoline at a national average at just above $4 per gallon as of this writing, it would seem that this would be the answer to our dilemma.
First of all, a car that can run on 100% water is years in the future. You've no doubt heard of the hydrogen powered car or the hydrogen fuel cell. Research has not brought this technology far enough along to be practical for mass production.
What this article is about is an old idea (over 90 years) that has been brought out of mothballs and reworked to apply to today's automobiles and trucks. It involves a process that separates water, h20, into a gas called HHO (2 hydrogen atoms + 1 oxygen atom.). It has also been called "hydroxy" (hydrogen-oxygen). It is produced with help from your car battery and is not stored but produced on an as needed basis. The system allows the HHO to be burned along with gasoline, which increases mileage and fuel efficiency.
The device that can make this happen and other parts of the system are readily available in hardware stores. All of the parts can be purchased for $200 or less. Installation can be done in just minutes. There is also a network of over 400 people who are making a living by manufacturing and installing these systems for people who just aren't do-it-yourself-ers.
I have found no exaggerated claims by the companies that I researched. The process improves the combustion efficiency of the engine resulting in a quieter and cleaner running engine. Depending on the age of the car or truck, mileage improvement ranges anywhere from 25% to 45% and higher. There are thousands of cars and trucks already using this technology. These people are networking with each other sharing their experiences with one another and with those who wish to convert their car or truck.
In my research I have found that the overall wish is that this technology will be further developed to increase its efficiency even further, giving us one more way to lessen our use of fossil fuels and decrease carbon emissions.
Okay, so if it is all hype, it will all be proven so and die out quickly. If not then it should be tested scientifically and developed further. I will be following this technology closely over the coming months. I am a firm believer in the American spirit and ingenuity. Many of our greatest inventions were started in basements and garages by so called "armchair engineers". Remember, the Apple computer and Amazon.com were both started in someone's garage.
