U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today announced $87.9 million in Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) discretionary funds for Interstate maintenance projects in 18 states.
"Continued strategic investment will improve America's transportation system," President Clinton said. "By helping to maintain our historic Interstate system, this funding will strengthen transportation, create jobs across the country, and yield significant dividends in terms of safety and economic growth."
FHWA discretionary funds are made available upon selection by the Secretary of Transportation after requests from states for funds for projects that meet criteria established by federal law and USDOT regulations and procedures. Congress also makes decisions on some grants.
The Interstate Maintenance Discretionary Program provides funds for resurfacing, restoration, rehabilitation and reconstruction work, including added lanes to increase capacity, on most existing Interstate system routes. Under federal law, the federal share of the costs for any project eligible under this program is 90 percent, or 80 percent on projects or that part of the work involving added single-occupancy vehicle lanes to increase capacity.
"The Interstate Highway System is a critical link in America's transportation network and maintaining it is important to all Americans and these grants will help ensure that people and freight continue to move safely and efficiently," Secretary Slater said. "President Clinton and Vice President Gore have demonstrated that investing wisely in transportation will improve safety, increase efficiency and strengthen the economy."
The Interstate Maintenance program was established by the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 and has been continued through subsequent legislation, including the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), which President Clinton signed into law in June 1998.
The Interstate maintenance discretionary program is administered by the FHWA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Further information about the Interstate Maintenance program is on the Internet at www.fhwa.dot.gov. Totals for the states are in the following table:
