Investment Funds New I-95/Penn Turnpike Interchange, 19 Other Projects
U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced that newly
released funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will help
reduce congestion, enhance safety and improve traffic flow at key transportation
projects around the state.
The Bush administration is providing more than $8.2 million for construction of a new interchange between Interstate 95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the reconstruction and widening of Interstate 476 in Philadelphia and 18 other Pennsylvania transportation projects.
"Investing in Pennsylvania's highways is the best way to get people to their jobs, families to their homes and goods to market," Secretary Mineta said.
Several of the projects will ease congestion on some of the state's most heavily traveled roads. The Bush administration has slated more than $1.1 million for the I-95/Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange and more than $481,000 for the I-476 improvements.
Other projects include almost $464,000 for ferryboats for the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority and more than $434,000 for the renovation of exits 298 and 299 on Interstate 80 near Stroudsburg.
"The funding we're announcing today is an investment in the transportation infrastructure of Pennsylvania and the region," said FHWA Administrator Mary Peters. "The President understands that these investments are important to our quality of life and to keep our economy moving."
The Secretary of Transportation makes FHWA funds available after requests from states for project funds that meet criteria established by federal law and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations and procedures. Congress also designates funding for specific projects under these programs.
