U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced that newly released funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will help reduce congestion, enhance safety and improve traffic flow at key transportation projects around the state. The Bush administration is providing more than $11.2 million for replacement of the Highway 19 Bridge in Herman, for improvements to U.S. Route 67 in southeastern Missouri and for seven other Missouri transportation projects.
"Investing in Missouri's highways is the best way to get people to their jobs, families to their homes and goods to market," Secretary Mineta said.
Several of the projects will ease congestion on some of the state's most heavily traveled roads. The Bush administration has slated almost $3.5 million to replace the Highway 19 Bridge in Hermann, just west of St. Louis, and $2.9 million for improvements to U.S. 67 in southeastern Missouri.
Other projects include $2.1 million for a new statewide technology that would speed up emergency services information and help link rural transit providers with those that need it. Also approved is almost $580,000 for the Flintlock Road Overpass in Liberty
"The funding we're announcing today is an investment in the transportation infrastructure of Missouri and the region," said FHWA Administrator Mary Peters. "The President understands that these investments are important to our quality of life and to keep our economy moving."
