Technology Will Help Drivers Find Open Parking Spaces

SAN FRANCISCO -A new system that provides real-time information on parking availability and price will help San Francisco drivers spend less time searching for parking, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today.

Federal Highway Deputy Administrator Greg Nadeau joined San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee to unveil SFpark, a parking pricing system that combines various Intelligent Transportation Systems.

"SFpark will improve livability in San Francisco and make it easier for people to take advantage of all the city has to offer," said Secretary LaHood. "It will help reduce congestion and emissions from idling cars because drivers will know exactly where to go to find parking spaces."

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is using a $19.4 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration for SFpark. The system will apply to 6,000 metered on-street parking spaces, about one-quarter of the city's total, and 12,500 spaces in more than 14 garages and lots. Eight areas of the city will have SFpark: the Civic Center, Hayes Valley, the Financial District, SoMa, the Mission, Fisherman's Wharf, the Fillmore and the Marina.

"This innovative system will save drivers time, fuel and frustration," said Deputy Administrator Nadeau. "It's also good for the economy because it will make it easier to shop and do business within the city."

The system collects and distributes real-time information through ITS, including sensors and data feed technology so real-time information can reach drivers directly. SFpark also will use dynamic message signs to inform drivers. Parking space prices will fluctuate according to availability.
