SANTA FE – Drunk driving is a deadly epidemic that takes the lives of more than 10,000 people each year on average, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Last year in New Mexico the Traffic Safety Division reported 125 alcohol-involved crash fatalities.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation, State Police and other law enforcement agencies will join initiatives to crack down on impaired driving by participating in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign beginning August 16th through September 2nd.

“Traffic Safety is always a top priority at NMDOT. Impaired drivers cause needless deaths and injuries. Having a plan could save your life or the life of someone you love.” Said NMDOT Cabinet Secretary Michael Sandoval.

In addition to the DWI checkpoints and patrols, law enforcement will be watching for distracted drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up and drivers violating the “Move Over Law,” which requires motorists to use extreme caution when passing emergency vehicles stopped in or on the side of the road.
