ALBUQUERQUE – Visitors can virtually experience a drunk driving crash and kick-starting a motorcycle at a New Mexico Department of Transportation-sponsored booth Thursday, Sept. 5, at Expo New Mexico.
Representatives from NMDOT’s Traffic Safety Division in collaboration with Safer New Mexico Now and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation also will hand out safety information at the booth in front of the Agriculture Building. Thursday is opening day of the New Mexico State Fair at Expo New Mexico.
“It’s a great opportunity to reach so many New Mexicans in our collective effort to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries,” said Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval. “People of all ages can see our department is about more than just building roads. We’re building trust with the community and showcasing our partnership with law enforcement and other traffic safety agencies,” Sandoval said.
A DWI virtual reality demonstration will be set up along with a motorcycle kick start simulation.
Visitors can also learn about proper motorcycle training, bicycle helmet and pedestrian safety with an emphasis on seatbelt use and proper car seat installation. The Buckle Bear mascot will also be on hand to take photos with children.
Expo New Mexico gates open at 10 a.m. Local and state law enforcement agents will be admitted free of charge with a valid ID. Thursdays are also Graze Days where snack size portions of fair food are just $3.
