An Audi heater core is like a small radiator positioned inside a plastic box under the dashboard. It basically allows coolant to flow through once the thermostat has opened. This brings in heat, so that one can run a car's heating system and fan to warm up the interior. The principle is exactly the same as the one used on the engine radiator, except that the heat is released inside the car instead of outside. The heater core consists of conductive piping coiled within aluminum fins to increase surface area. Through some hoses, heated coolant reaches the heater core at the inlet, and travels through the coiled piping. Finally, it exits from the outlet and returns to the water pump.

The most common problem in Audi heater cores is leaking. Leaks usually occur on the connector hoses. When this happens, the results are usually a distinct smell and some fogging of the windshield above the heater vents. Also, when water leaks from the heater core to the floor pan, rust problems will eventually occur. Aside from leaks, clogging is also another problem with heater cores. Clogging usually takes place in the piping of the heater core causing restricted coolant flow, a condition that reduces or even omits heating capacity.

While the Audi heater core makes sure that the cabin is warm and comfortable, another part ensures the efficiency of the combustion process -- the Audi oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor is a small sensor inserted into the exhaust system of a petrol engine. Its main task is to measure the concentration of oxygen remaining in the exhaust gas to allow an electronic control unit (ECU) to regulate the efficiency of the engine combustion process. Located in the exhaust manifold, the Audi oxygen sensor accurately detects air and gasoline mixture level – whether it is too lean (too littler fuel) or too rich (too much fuel.

A good Audi oxygen sensor contributes greatly to an increased fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. It also helps improve engine performance and reduce air pollution. Failure of the Audi oxygen sensor can be attributed to normal wearing out and the heavy use of leaded fuels.
