NEWARK, NJThe NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors appointed James J. Gigantino as the Vice President and General Manager of NJ TRANSIT Bus Operations at today’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Mr. Gigantino has served as NJ TRANSIT’s Acting Vice President and General Manager of Bus Operations since March 2003, overseeing operations for a fleet of more than 2,100 buses, which serve an average of 530,000 customers on a typical weekday. In his official role, he will also assume responsibility of service planning for the agency’s 240 bus routes.

“The depth of Jim’s experience and his knowledge of NJ TRANSIT Bus Operations will be of great value as we focus on optimizing our transportation system across the state and making bus, light rail and commuter rail work efficiently and reliably, independently, and in connection with one another,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Richard Sarles.

“Safe and reliable bus service is critical to our State and the region, with bus passengers accounting for two out of every three riders carried on the NJ TRANSIT system,” said Gigantino. “I am committed to ensuring that Bus Operations figures prominently in realizing our vision of making NJ TRANSIT the preferred choice for travel.”

In 1988, Mr. Gigantino joined NJ TRANSIT as the head of the Bus Safety department, and later advanced to Deputy General Manager of Technical Training and Safety. In that position, he was responsible for all operational, mechanical and management training and safety initiatives.

Mr. Gigantino received the Innovations in Training Award from the National Transit Institute in 1995 for his work on computer-based training and simulation. He was promoted in 1996 to NJ TRANSIT’s Deputy General Manager of Transportation and was responsible for all bus transportation activities statewide, including depot operations, terminals and park-rides, control center operations and service supervision.

As part of NJ TRANSIT’s Senior Bus Leadership team, Mr. Gigantino coordinated the start-up of new garages in Jersey City, Wayne and Egg Harbor Township, as well as the Atlantic City Bus Terminal and Route 23 Park-Ride. He also coordinated the closure and consolidation of service from obsolete garages in Wildwood and Warwick.

A lifetime resident of New Jersey, Mr. Gigantino earned an Associate in Arts degree from Union County College, and a Bachelor of Science in Management Science from Kean University.

NJ TRANSIT is the nation's largest statewide public transportation system providing nearly 857,000 weekday trips on 240 bus routes, three light rail lines and 11 commuter rail lines. It is the third largest transit system in the country with 162 rail stations, 60 light rail stations and more than 18,000 bus stops linking major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia.
