NEWARK, NJ — With this year’s first “gridlock alert” day less than 48 hours away, NJ TRANSIT is gearing up to provide additional trains and buses for the benefit of commuters and visitors alike.

A “gridlock alert” is issued by the New York City Department of Transportation on the busiest traffic days of the year. In addition to Friday Nov. 19, the other designated gridlock alert days for 2004 are: Wednesday, Nov. 24 (day before Thanksgiving); Tuesday, Nov. 30 (tree lighting at Rockefeller Center); Friday, Dec. 10 (popular shopping day); Wednesday, Dec. 15 (matinee day at Broadway theaters/popular shopping day); Thursday, Dec. 16 (popular shopping day); Friday, Dec. 17 (popular shopping day); Wednesday, Dec. 22 (matinee day at Broadway theaters/popular shopping day); and Thursday, Dec. 23 (day before Christmas Eve).

“With the holidays fast approaching, this is a good time to remind everyone that our trains and buses offer a convenient alternative into and out of midtown Manhattan,” said Lynn Bowersox, NJ TRANSIT Assistant Executive Director for External Affairs. “Whether you’re going shopping, taking in a Broadway show, watching the tree lighting or headed to the parade, we encourage you to leave the car at home.”

For the benefit of NYC visitors this holiday season:

NJ TRANSIT offers direct, frequent service to New York Penn Station from points along the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, Montclair-Boonton Line and Morris & Essex Lines. Connecting service to New York is available at Secaucus Junction for customers on the Main, Bergen and Pascack Valley lines.
