The advertising of the Ford Motor Company is particularly interesting in that it is the only manufacturer of automobiles which has confined its advertising during the past season exclusively to newspapers, and during that time the Ford Company has made and sold more automobiles than any other manufacturer.
Mr. E. Le Roy Pelletier, advertising director of the Ford Company, in speaking to an interested man of his reasons for the newspaper campaign and its results, said that the Ford Company had sold nearly 11,000 cars since July of last year. Ten thousand of these have been the famous Ford runabout. Mr. Pelletier said that his decision to use daily newspapers exclusively for bringing the Ford car to the attention of the public was made in the face of the opposition of all the advertising experts who gave the Ford management the benefit of their opinions. They all agreed that the Ford Company, if it did not advertise in magazines, would lose much of the fame which comes from " general and widespread publicity " afforded by magazines. Yet it is doubtful if any car is better known than the Ford, and the number of cars sold during the time of the newspaper advertising represents a cash value of $7,250,000. The total advertising expenses will be considerably less than 1 per cent. of that amount.
