STANDARD TYPE REACHED. Publication: The New York Times Byline: Frank Briscoe Date: 27 October 1907 Note: Part of a subsection called “How Auto Manufacturers View the Trend of Car Development” |
Purely pleasure cars seem to have reached a general standard type, differing makes varying as a rule only in details and workmanship. The popular vehicle, on the other hand, is far from being determined as to type. The high wheel buggy idea for certain uses appears to have become established, but there is hardly one other established feature unless it be in general that of simplicity which might be considered typical of any low-priced car. Personally, I believe that the single cylinder car will eventually sell in greater numbers than all other motor types together. By the same token I should say that the six-cylinder will be limited to small class of buyers. While I think that a good many manufacturers are straying away from the right field and that the production of luxurious pleasure cars has almost reached its high water mark, I hazard the guess, based on statistics of horse-drawn vehicles, that an annual production of at least 200,000 of the right kind of automobiles will be required permanently in this country.
