CANADA'S OUTPUT OF AUTOMOBILES

Publication: The New York Times
Date: 31 August 1930

Present Production Shows a Downward Trend--Dominion's 1929 Record.

Canada is now one of the leading exporters of motor cars among the commercial nations of the world, says the Canadian Pacific Railway. Its exports are, in fact, exceeded only by those of the United States, adds the railway. "In the last fiscal year Canada shipped automobiles to over fifty different countries, and automobile tire casings to almost as many," a bulletin on the subject continues. "The Canadian industry has made rapid growth in recent years though there have been fluctuations owing to special conditions. Production in the present year has shown a downward trend but the calendar year 1929 saw a new record set up.

"Production of automobiles in Canada in 1929 started at a higher rate than in previous years with a total of 21,000 cars in January. It then rose rapidly to a new monthly output peak of 40,621 cars in March, but this new record was in turn surpassed in April when the greatest monthly output in the history of the industry was reached at 41,901 cars.

"May marked the first recession from the rapid rise and output then declined steadily each month, with the exception of October, to the lowest level of the year and the second lowest monthly total of recent years at 5,495 cars in December. The production for the year was 263,295 cars.

"The automobile industry has the largest production value of any of the iron and steel industries of the Dominion. In 1928, the last year for which these figures are available, the selling value of the products at the works was $162,667,495 while the production of automobile accessories for that year was $17,007,157.

"The export of motor cars from the Dominion in the fiscal year ending in March last was valued at $37,606,387. In the previous year, however, it had reached $45,442,926, which showed an increase of approximately $16,000,000 from $29,405,965 in 1923.

"The Dominion is an importer of motor cars but her exports are double her imports. In the calendar year 1929 imports numbered 44,724 as compared with 47,468 in the previous year, while exports advanced to 102,302 from 79,855 cars in 1928. The apparent consumption of motor cars in Canada during 1929, as determined by deducting the number of cars exported from the sum of production and imports, was 205,717, which was a decline of 2 per cent from the record of 209,607 cars established in 1928."
