California, Missouri, New Hampshire and Vermont received a total of $2.36 million in grants from the Federal Highway Administration based on their innovative proposals to complete highway projects using technologies that will improve safety and decrease construction-related congestion. The technologies include the Safety Edge, an innovation that helps drivers keep control of their vehicles when attempting to reenter the roadway after tires slip onto the shoulder, and hybrid composite materials made from glass fiber, concrete and steel which reduce construction time by 26 percent and provide a service life beyond 100 years. The Highways for LIFE initiative promotes safety during and after construction, reduces congestion caused by construction and improves the quality of the highway infrastructure.
