MOSCOW-TRAFFIC-ZEBRAS

It took a zebra to stop Moscow’s traffic.

Moscow drivers are notorious for their aggressive driving and routinely ignore striped pedestrian zones, known as zebra crossings.

Dozens of people, including children, were killed in the capital in the first six months of this year while trying to use pedestrian crossings.

But drivers finally slowed down Friday when police-escorted “zebras” strolled out in front of them as the streetlight crossing signs turned green.

The stunt — in which police painted white horses with black stripes — aimed to raise awareness among drivers. One horse carried a bright yellow sign that read: “Careful, children on their way to school”.

Some information in this story was provided by AP and AFP.
