23 Malawians Killed in South Africa Crash

VOA Breaking News
September 19, 2010

Police in South Africa say 23 people, all from Malawi, have been killed in a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck.

Police say the minibus hit the truck head-on near the town of Laingsburg early Saturday. Twenty-two of the victims died at the scene, while another man died in a hospital Sunday.

Four children from the bus are being treated for serious injuries. The only other survivor of the accident was the truck driver.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

Accidents involving minibus taxis are common in South Africa. The taxis are often poorly-maintained and dangerously overcrowded.
