Minibus Accident Kills at Least 11 in China

VOA Breaking News

At least 11 people, including a child and a baby, have been killed as a minibus toppled from a Chinese roadway and plunged into a reservoir.

The state-run news agency Xinhua said Saturday that the accident occurred Friday afternoon as the minibus driver apparently swerved to avoid hitting a motorbike and lost control of the vehicle. The minibus rolled over and fell into a hydropower station reservoir near Shaowu City in Fujian province.

Authorities said nine people were rescued but one was still missing.

Chinese roads are among the most dangerous in the world. Police say that in 2009, nearly 70,000 people died in accidents, around 190 fatalities a day.
