Automakers Cut Back Production after Japan Quake, Tsunami

Automakers Cut Back Production after Japan Quake, Tsunami

VOA Breaking News (Voice of America)

The auto industry disruption triggered by Japan's earthquake and tsunami appears likely to get worse.

Production shutdowns following the March 11 disasters have hurt the supply of models like the Toyota Prius and Yaris, Honda Fit and Mazda2 subcompacts.

Toyota restarts production of the Prius and two Lexus hybrids Monday, but is expected to keep most of its other plants closed into next week.

Honda extended its production halt in Japan to April 3. The company said last week it would resume production of motorcycles and power products at its plant in Kyushu in southern Japan.

Other vehicle companies have said they will have to reduce their production output until they recover.

The slowdowns are expected to reduce choices of parts, models, colors and options for consumers.
