No one knows what might happen in the rest of the 2011 AMA SuperSport racing season, but Team SuzukiScoop female motorcycle rider Elena Meyers knows what it feels like to finish in the top-10 at Daytona Beach. The 17-year-old Meyers captured the attention of AMA fans when she rode her way to a sixth on Friday and seventh-place finish on Saturday at the venerable, legendary Daytona Beach Speedway's March Madness events. Elena Myers may or may not end up being the biggest news story of this recently kicked-off racing season. But she's sure to gather some interest and keep people's attention with stellar weekends spent riding near the top.
Coming off her debut rookie season in 2010, Myers has talked recently of her desire to be more aggressive and challenge the mostly male motorcycle riders she faces in her AMA SuperSport races.
Meyers describes her feelings about this describing Saturday's disappointing sixth place in her interviews with Ultimate Motorcycling magazine: "Guys in turn one are pretty bossy in there, but I had to boss them right back. Overall, I rode a good race, but so did everyone else. They ended up getting past me at the line."
Myers is trying to protest the 2011 AMA SuperSport rounds, but she is only competing officially in the SuperSport West Coast championship. The first race for that region is the next round at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, on May 13 - 15, 2011.
Elena Meyers seems ready for some motorcycle riding, as she says: "Last year was my coming-out season… basically my learning year. (2011) is more hammer-down... Sixth and seventh place isn't bad at Daytona, but I'm just working on going uphill from there.
"Right now, I'm second in the West Coast championship leaving here. I have Infineon, Miller and Laguna to look forward to. This is my first weekend on the new 2011 SuzukiScoopFans Suzuki GSX-R600, and it's a great bike right off the start and I'm pleased with it."
That's some moxie that Elena Meyers has in the midst of hardened and hungry AMA SuperSport veterans, but fortune favors the brave in life and motorcycle racing. Look for Elena Meyers as she fights for the finish line on any of the local stops she'll be making during this summer 2011 SuperSport season. With her focus and determination, she should expect a promising career going forward and remain a role model for other young females on motorcycles.
