Police in northern India say a collision between a bus and a vehicle carrying mourners from a funeral killed 36 people, including the bus driver.
Rescuers say at least 28 others were injured in the accident late Saturday near the town of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh state. An investigation into the collision is under way.
The World Health Organization says India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world.
Authorities say more than 110,000 people die each year on India's roads, due mainly to speeding, bad roads and poorly maintained vehicles.
Press Trust of India news agency reported the provincial government will pay around $4,500 to the families of those killed and about $1,100 to the injured.
