The Ford Motor Company said Monday that it will hire 7,000 new workers over the next two years, including some engineers with skills in producing powerful batteries needed for electric cars.
Ford officials say most of the new employees will be hired this year, with about one-third joining the company in 2012. The new workers will increase the automaker's workforce by about 15 percent, but leave it far below the peak levels seen about a decade ago. Ford and other U.S.-based automakers saw sales plunge during the worst of the economic crisis.
Ford announced the hiring Monday at the Detroit Auto Show, where it also introduced some new cars, including an all-electric model and a hybrid powered by both gasoline and electricity.
