DENVER, North Carolina (June 23, 2011) - Former ARCA Racing Series Rookie of the Year Matt Carter turned some heads last weekend at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Carter, the Denver, North Carolina native has been running a start and park effort for Fleur-De-Lis Motorsports. The underfunded team with Carter behind the wheel qualified an impressive 20th in the No. 68 Chevrolet Impala SS. Unfortunately, though, the lack of sponsorship dollars kept Carter from competing in the Alliance Truck Parts 250.
Still, the avid racecar driver is hoping that his performance at the two-mile oval will either spark some interest that will attract some potential sponsorship dollars or be offered an opportunity to drive for another team.
“It was a great to do what we did last weekend at Michigan,” said Carter. “The team doesn’t have a lot of funds and has a very skeleton crew, but we went out there and out qualified some of the best in the series. That just shows that we can make it here in this series, we just need a little help to make it happen.”
With the outlook of Fleur-De-Lis Motorsports unknown at this time, Carter is reaching out to the racing industry letting it be known that he is willing and eager to drive.
“I’m working on some sponsorship opportunities, but I’m ready to drive in any series and show everyone what I can do,” Carter explained. “Right now, I’m not planning to run at Daytona with Fleur-De-Lis Motorsports but I’m hoping that maybe that phone will ring and someone will pan out and I’m able to compete.”
Carter, the son of NASCAR legendary crew chief and car owner Travis Carter showed extreme gratefulness to Fleur-De-Lis Motorsports owner Craig Partree and Rick Ware, who’s assisted FDL throughout the course of the 2011 season.
“I cannot thank Craig and Rick enough,” added Carter. “I don’t like doing start and parks just like any other driver. I am a race car driver, I want to race. Right now though, this is what I have to do to keep my name out there and learn these new Nationwide cars. Hopefully we’ll be able to acquire some sponsorship later this year that will help me give the regulars a run for their money.”
The 30-year old has competed in six of the 15 NASCAR Nationwide Series contests thus far in 2011 all for Fleur-De-Lis Motorsports.
