As a parent you'd do anything to keep your kids safe, from installing training wheels on a bike, to putting pads and a helmet on them every time they ride a bike, by putting floaters on them in the tub or pool, by buying the top safety rated car seats, and the list goes on and on. So why do you text while driving? That's what BMW is asking with their short commercial for their "Don't Text and Drive" campaign. If you go through all the trouble to keep your kids safe, but text and drive you aren't keeping anyone safe.

Some people will argue "oh this is a teenager issue" or "well it's not as bad as drinking and driving". This is not the case as nearly 50% of adults admit to texting while driving compared to only 34% of teens. Also 500,000 accidents occur each year due to distracted driving. Texting while driving is becoming more of an issue as more and more people begin using mobile devices to communicate. The American Automobile Association states that looking away from the road for even two seconds is enough to double your chances of a crash.

So now that the facts are out, and it is proven that texting while driving is not safe, what can you do to prevent yourself from texting while driving? BMW has a few suggestions for this. First tip is you can turn your cell phone off or put your cell phone in a place where you can't reach it like a bag, the trunk, or glove box. Secondly, when taking longer trips you can let people know that you will be unavailable so you won't receive any calls or texts. Lastly, use advanced car technologies like text to speech, Bluetooth connectivity, my info, and more to communicate safely while driving.

BMW has always been interested in driver safety though not just with texting and driving but for safety in general. They have come up with a variety of safety features in their cars to make driving easier and safer without sacrificing performance. An example of this is night vision, which uses a night vision camera that projects its imagine on the center console and has vision in the dark out to 328 yards ahead allowing you to see pedestrians, deer, or other obstacles long before reaching them. BMW also came up with Active Knee Protection which is a special airbag to protect your knees in a severe crash and this also makes the dashboard smaller as the padding placed there is replaced for the smaller airbag. Other features include things like adaptive brake lights which get brighter the harder you hit the lights, enhanced braking system which predicts how much force is necessary when you hit the brakes, lane departure warning, park distance control in the rear (a beeping noise sounds if you get too close to a car), All-Season Traction, hill descent control, run flat tires, xenon adaptive headlights, and many more innovations.

Despite all these innovations by BMW in safety technology, safe driving starts with good driving practices. By following the rules of the road, driving laws, and by keeping your phone out of your hands you can stay safe on the road and also help keep others safe as well.
