Seatbelts are an invention designed with us in mind; to protect us in the case of a collision of accident, or even a sudden stop. So why do a lot of people not bother to put them on? studies show that if they were worn by every driver on the roads then there would have been three hundred lives saved in 2007 alone, not to mention the subsequent years. That works out to be nearly one life a day lost to not using the safety measures that we are offered within our cars. It's also illegal to drive without a seatbelt.
The seventeen to thirty four year old age bracket are the most guilty of not wearing their seatbelts, and in 2009 there were over one thousand people killed in crashes; twenty one percent of these were not wearing a seatbelt.
People seem to be less likely to wear their seatbelts on short journeys; this is a worrying statistic as it is short journeys that people are familiar with that we have more accidents in, and it has also been shown that the majority of accidents occur within a ten mile radius of their home.
You are twice as likely to die in a car crash if you aren't wearing a seatbelt, so make sure you buckle up on every journey. Drivers caught mot wearing their belt face a sixty pounds on the spot fine and three points on their driving licence, and if you are a repeat offender you could be fined five hundred pounds and prosecuted for this driving offence.
So why put your life at risk? Something as easy as clipping your belt in before turning the engine on and making a trip could save your life, and its not a chore. It takes two seconds, and by doing this you could half the chances of you dying in a road accident.
