No matter how hard you try, keeping a clean car can be a tremendous challenge. Though well-meant rules prohibiting food, drinks, and cigarettes from coming within 10 feet of your vehicle may last for a week or two, these rules are highly difficult to maintain given the fast-pace of today's lifestyle. People often need to eat or drink in their cars while traveling, and though food wrappers and old cups are a large problem for many people they aren't the only things that clutter the inside of your vehicle.
To keep your automobile's interior clean, smelling fresh, and completely comfortable, try these tips:
1. Always take everything with you when you get out of the car. If you have several bags, trash, cups, or even luggage make sure that you get it all out at one time instead of waiting to clean it out later. If you leave items in your car you will be less likely to remove them, making them more likely to pile up.
2. Keep a designated trash bag if necessary. Depending on how many people you are toting around on a daily basis, you may want to keep an old grocery bag in your car. This way everyone can put their trash into the bag and clean up will be easy, simply carry the bag to the dumpster when it is full. Remember not to leave it overnight if it has food in it, though, because that can cause a less than favorable odor that will require a deep cleaning to get out of your car's upholstery.
3. Wipe everything down regularly. The automobile section at your local department store is full of brands that carry wipes already loaded with cleaner. Simply put a box of these wipes in your glove box and use them to clean the surfaces of your car once a week. This is a really simple chore and will keep your car's interior looking and smelling great—and it can be done at virtually any location and at any time! Waiting in line to pick up your kids from school or stuck in a long fast food drive thru? Do a little cleaning!
4. Utilize the power of the vacuum. The upholstery on your seats and the carpet in the floorboards can trap unpleasant odors, dirt, and other substances that can be ground into the fabric and shorten its lifespan. A quick vacuum once a week will limit the amount of debris that gets stored in your car's interior and keep it smelling fresh. If you have odors you can't get rid of, or often transport your pets, try a carpet powder that works with the vacuum to leave the interior of the vehicle smelling like new.
5. Don't overdo it on the air freshener. A quick odor eliminator or neutralizer is a great item to keep handy, and should be sprayed every time you vacuum and air out your vehicle, but stay away from the overly strong or sweet smells that will make your car uncomfortable to ride in.
