King, N.C. – In football, one of the most important, and under-appreciated, roles on the team falls to the fullback. It's the fullback's job primarily to block for the running back and get them through the wall of defenders to the endzone and the touchdown.
Consider Angie Smith the lead fullback for Matt Smith Racing.
The NHRA Full Throttle Series Pro Stock Motorcycle veteran is outside the top-ten and therefore, not in the Countdown to 1, the NHRA's playoff system. Her husband and team owner, former class champion Matt Smith, is in the Countdown, however. After a semi-final appearance at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C., Sunday, Matt has moved to third in points behind points leader Eddie Krawiec and Karen Stoffer. While Angie can still race for wins, she is unable to win a title, but she can help Matt earn his second NHRA title and plans to do so this weekend at the Texas Motorplex for the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals.
She and Matt, who also acts as tuner to both her and fellow MSR rider, Michael Ray, stayed at zMAX Monday to test their Buells with positive results. "We're really excited about Dallas because we stayed at Charlotte to test and found some horsepower," she said. "Now, it's up to me and Michael to act as blockers for Matt and help bring the title back to MSR."
The strong test session helped take the sting out of Angie's first-round exit Sunday at her home track against Hector Arana III courtesy of leaving the line .008 seconds too early. Ironically, it was a red light that took her out of the race in Dallas last year in the first round against eventual race runner-up, Andrew Hines.
The AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex in Dallas kicks off Friday with Pro Stock Motorcycle and Pro Stock qualifying at 2:15 p.m. local time, followed by a second round of time trials at 5:15. Saturday's qualifying is scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with eliminations slated for Sunday at 11 a.m. Spectator gates open at 8:30 a.m. Friday, 7:30 a.m. Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
