ASHEBORO, North Carolina (August 30, 2011) - - NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) standout Ryan Wilson backed up a recent double-dose of podium finishes with a commendable third place finish last Friday night in his No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry.
The first 100-lap event at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway of the season was set with Wilson, a local favorite at the historic short track aiming for his first victory of the season. By the conclusion of practice, it was evident that the team would be a threat as Wilson exited his racecar extremely pleased.
Set for qualifying, Wilson rocketed a lap good enough to score the 19-year old his second pole position of the season. However, track rules stimulate though that the top-six qualifiers must redraw for their actual placement on the starting grid. The draw put the Ryan Wilson Motorsports (RWM) team on the outside pole, which was comforting entering the night’s showdown.
From the drop of the green flag it didn’t take long for Wilson’s No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry to lead the way as the Randleman, North Carolina-native took control of the field by the conclusion of lap one. Wilson would continue to dominate the race for 78 consecutive laps before a loose condition set in on his No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry, forcing Wilson to relinquish the lead inside the final 20 laps of the event.
A gallant effort from the rising star to chase down and re-pass the leader would be stalled by an unexplainable late race caution with 15 laps to go. Set for the final restart of the night, Wilson opted to stay on the inside line with another competitor using the cone which allowed him to pull up to the outside of the leader.
With all his might, Wilson tried to shove his way back into the lead on the restart but would have to settle into third where he took the checkered flag.
“We had a really good car tonight,” said Wilson. “We were able to pull away for a while but as the race went on we started to get really loose. I guess they wanted to make the race interesting with 15 to go by throwing an unnecessary caution and that ended up costing us."
After 17 races this season at Caraway, Wilson has delivered two poles, nine top-fives and 15 top-10 finishes. The one statistic that continues to elude the winner of last Fall’s Richard Petty Driver Search II is victory. With points no longer a top priority for Ryan Wilson Motorsports (RWM), the team is determined not to go down without a fight as they realize they still a couple opportunities left this season to land in victory circle.
“It would have been nice to put the No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry in victory lane, along with my guys, who really bust their tails to keep our car as competitive as possible, but we just missed it. We’re going to keep trying. I just want to thank Randolph Bank and all of our marketing partners at Ryan Wilson Motorsports for their continued support.”
The next scheduled event for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Caraway is set for Saturday, September 17 with another 100-lap dash on deck.
Immediately following the event, Wilson will prepare to head to Kansas Speedway where he will participate in an open ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards test session with Win-Tron Racing in preparation for their 18th race of the season, the Kansas Lottery 98.9 which is set to launch on Friday, October 7.
