Signboards for Crossroads.
The New York Times
6 August 1896
Signboards having a dark blue background on which will be large raised letters of yellow will soon be placed along the highways of the Empire State, under direction of the officers of the New York Division of the League of American Wheelmen. Several thousand will be placed at crossroads on thirteen-foot locust posts. The boards will tell the distance and direction of places and will be a boon to tourists. The cost of the boards will be met by a fund created by the State division meet, held at the Manhattan Beach track in June, 1895.
