Duration: 13:40 This video uses crash-test footage to present the tradeoffs involved in selecting an appropriate bridge railing for a project. Three railing designs are shown: the New Jersey barrier, the F-barrier and the vertical wall. Barrier performance levels, set by AASHTO for expected traffic speed and volume, are discussed. Vehicle stability, post-collision trajectory and occupant response characteristics are emphasized in the discussion of the benefits of each barrier shape for containing and redirecting small-car and truck impacts.
