1939: President Franklin D. Roosevelt submits Reorganization Plan No. 1 to Congress. The plan transfers Bureau of Public Roads (renamed PRA) to the new Federal Works Agency and changes the title of the head of PRA to Commissioner of Public Roads. The Federal Works Agency also includes the Public Buildings Administration, the U.S. Housing Authority, the Public Works Administration, and the Work Projects Administration. Approved by Congress, via Joint Resolution, on June 7, the plan goes into effect on July 1, 1939.

1979: FHWA Division Office staffers in Oklahoma participate in an emergency preparedness exercise to test the State's highway emergency plans, with a mock nuclear attack on April 26 as the focus.

1993: A fire destroyed the vacant former Stewart-Warner offices and factory in Chicago, Illinois.

2001: Michele Alboreto died.

2016: Production of the Volvo V70 ended.
