Since the GT designation means "Gran Turismo" or "Grand Touring" in English, and also considering the complete lack of performance parts for Hyundais', I have been using universal fit electronic components to make it a more comfortable ride.

Subject:  2001 Hyundai Accent
Message:  As far as I've heard from Automotive News, the 2001 Hyundai Accent will have a larger displacement engine, replacing the 1.5L SOHC that has been a standard in the Accent since its creation. The predecessor Excel also had a 1.5L engine.
No word yet as to exact specs, but I'm looking. My best estimate is the 1.8L DOHC, removed from the Elantra in favor of the 2.0L DOHC. Unless they completely engineer a new engine from the ground up, which means the actual size could be anybody's guess.

Message:  New for 2001...According to Edmunds.com, the new, larger displacement engine will come on the GS (hatchback), and put out 105 hp No word as to cams (SOHC or DOHC, though I believe it to be SOHC).
This is equivalent to the 1.5L DOHC that came on the 1995-1998 Hyundai Accent GT.

What this means for Accent ownwers: The 199? Accent GTs have not lost their status as having the most horsepower of a stock Accent, they are tied (big news for me, my car is stock under the hood). I was hoping for 1.8L, but the 1.6 is acceptable, since Honda Civic's base is 1.6 SOHC. Perhaps with an even bigger engine the Accent can gain respectability with import tuners, especially with the low weight and good style.
The reason I say it is SOHC is because the 1.5L put out 105 as a DOHC, a 1.6 DOHC should put out at least 110.
This also ups the ante for the subcompact arena. The only other current subcompact with close to the same power is the Kia Rio. No word yet as to the same engine upgrade available on the Rio, as Hyundai acquired Kia some months back.

Subject:  2001 Toyota Echo
Message:  From the 2001 Toyota full-line brochure. The 2001 Toyota Echo comes in 2- and 4-door models. It has a 16 valvle VVT-i engine, 4-way adjustable front seats, 14" wheels (P175/65R14 tires) and the distinctive center-mounted instrument display.
It comes in Super White, Alpine Silver Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Electric Green Mica (Dark Green), Seafoam Blue Metallic (Light Blue), Brilliant Blue Pearl (Navy Blue), Absolutely Red and Satin Gold Metallic.
Also has multi-reflector halogen headlamps, LCD odometer w/ twin tripmeters, tilt steering wheel, dual airbags, center console storage, dual glove compartments, 4-speaker AM/FM radio, and dual front and rear cup holders.
Options include ABS, spoiler, air conditioning, rear defogger, side impact airbags, power locks, a 6-speaker CD player, and a 60/40 split rear seat, and power steering.

All things considered, a very basic, stripped-down car. Fully loaded with options, the car can get pricey, but is worth the cost to a quality conscious customer. Toyota has a legendary reputation for quality, but as the Echo is new, it is as of yet unproven.
Base cost is around $10,000 to 12,000, depending on local prices/sales, etc. that I've seen. You can get a base model Hyundai Accent for $8,000, an Elantra for $10,500, and a Chevrolet Cavalier for $10,400. If value is important, a fully loaded (A/C, CD, etc.) Accent might cost less than a stripped Echo.
In my opinion, another excellent Toyota, but not worth the price tag.

All the gasoline models in the car are either a 1.4L (85 cu. in.) or 1.6L (98 cu. in.) inline four. It has a cast iron block, and a belt-driven overhead cam. Pistons are aluminum alloy.

Beginning in 1981, the Chevette had an optional 1.8L inline four diesel engine. The cast-iron, cross-flow cylinder head also has a pre-combustion chamber.

The April 2000 Hot Rod magazine features a 1980 Chevette with a 500 cu. in. Cadillac motor. Total cost of the car was $2,271 and went an altitude-corrected 11.98 quarter mile.

Now that we've got new members, I'll be putting up posts more often, and maybe soon some pictures.

Ok, I'll start this off. I've got a 1997 Hyundai Accent GT, dark green. So far, I haven't done much to it. Mostly, I'm putting in electronics and stuff like that rather than performance parts. I put in a power tap and a CB radio. I also took out the tape deck for a CD player. I want to get an amp and nice speakers for the trunk, and a 12V DC to 120V AC converter, so I can run stuff when camping or on long road trips.

I'm kinda curious about the engine/trans in that car. From what I read on the sticker at the dealership, it has a 1.5L SOHC. I'm curious if it is the same engine/trans as the Accent, since Kia merged with Hyundai. But I think it was too recent for changes like that already. I've tried getting a Rio brochure from Kia, but they sent me a 2000 full-line, which is just the Sephia and Sportage.

The subcompact market doesn't have a lot of competition. You have the Accent, Rio, Echo, Metro/Swift and Lanos. Compared to, say, the SUV market, the subcompact market is open.

What they probably will do is what GM does with the Cavalier/Sunfire. The companies have two distinctive, different "looks", Hyundai with the creased edges, and Kia with round lines and lights.

Anyway, to cut costs, they will probably share drivetrain, if not platform. The interior might also be the same in the next generation. Same options packages, same parts around the car. But different sheet metal, to reflect the two styles.

Subject:  New Subcompacts
Message:  Anyway, now that I think of it, the subcompact market is a little more open these days. We only have that handful of new cars. This is good for anybody in the business, since they don't have the same stiff competition as the SUV market, even though the prfoit margins are less.

But for the fans, we might like a few new cars.

Anyone ever seen the Ford Ka? It's their European subcompact. Think Aspire-sized Focus hatchback.

Also, GM has their own European subcompact, built by them instead of Suzuki. It's called the Chevrolet Celta.

BMW will get into the hame with the BWM Mini Cooper. But this will cost around $17,000, not quite in the same price range as a Daewoo Lanos.

The Kia Avella. This was the Ford Aspire, built by Kia and rebadged as Ford. They also came in 5-door, but never sold by Ford.

Honda sells a few products smaller than the Civic, with 3-cylinder engines. Some of them come with 4 cylinders as an option. This would be an awesome prospect for serious tuners, because of the low weight (even less than Civic) and Honda's aftermarket support would keep those of us less serious about racing happy.

An all-new Mazda 323.

Since subcompacts sometimes look like shrunken compacts, think of the potential for smaller versions of these cars: Nissan Sentra, Dodge Neon, Mitsubishi Mirage, Mazda Protege.

Maybe when the economy finally dips into recession, we might see a few more subcompacts on the roads here. Maybe the fuel crisis will continue, and monster SUVs will go out of style. One can only hope...when you consider people using three gallons of premium to get their Suburban to the store, and espcially when you think of a 2001 Ford Ka in a tangle with a Ford Excursion.

Message:  I finally have confirmed information from the 2001 Hyundai full line brochure regarding the new engine upgrade for the Hyundai Accent GS and GL.

The base engine is, as always, a 1.5L SOHC putting out 92hp.

The new engine for the GS and GL is a 1.6L DOHC putting out 105hp.

The engine for the older Accent GTs was a 1.5L DOHC putting out 105hp, the same horsepower as the new GS/GL engine but with less displacement. Either the GT engine is better tuned or perhaps the new engine has better torque.

I'm a Daewoo Believer - and I'm watching hopefully as the prospects for Daewoo's continued presence and support in the US, and the promise for future Daewoo cars that I'd like to purchase right here in the US, appear to be in your hands.

I believe that Daewoo has done some important things very differently, and that's why I am the proud owner of a Daewoo automobile.

They appear to have trusted Ital Design to design cars that are both uniquely appealing and functional, and they apparently have created one heck of a quality production system.

I'm 50 years old and have never seen such high quality at such a good market price as Daewoo offers, and others seem to agree.

I say, "Buy in, leave 'em alone, and Daewoo will continue to march forward here in the US and worldwide to return a very healthy reward for your investment in them."

Thank you. Peter Blaise

So, enjoy your Daewoo's, and let GM know what YOU want! Thanks!

Hi Matthew,

The simple answer? Check with others at the Daewoo groups within Yahoo! - go to

http://groups.yahoo.com

and search for

Daewoo

and you'll find all the links you need - each of the many Daewoo groups (31 at last count) has a links/bookmarks page with references to the speed-mods they prefer, and of course, if you join you can review the messages already shared and ask people what they think of the mods they've already made.

Also, go to

http://www.google.com

and enter

the name of the part you are after (such as "headers") plus Daewoo (or Hyundai, which is more popular)

such as

Daewoo Lanos headers

Daewoo Lanos exhaust

Daewoo Lanos mags

and so on, or just enter

korean auto parts

and Google will show you lots of places to start.

--

The long answer, and probably more insightful answer is to ask you some questions back:

Tell us a little more about what you like and enjoy and know about your new car's performance and how it matches your driving style and expectations ...

... and then tell us a little more about what you'd like to improve and enhance to make your car even more satisfactory for your preferences.

(... for instance, I like a quiet car, so a loud exhaust wouldn't be right for me, but compared to the steel wheel son my car, mag wheels would lighten my car's unsprung weight and provide a smoother ride and longer life from my car's suspension parts and tires!)

So, Matthew, tell us more!

G'luck,

Peter Blaise

COOL!

I hope you found the header resources, turbo and supercharger resources, camshaft resources, ECM resources, and body and chassis mod resources you're probably looking for in your searches at http://groups.yahoo.com and http://www.google.com

I'm still curious, though, is there anything about the car (that is, it's features and benefits) that you find valuable to you, and that you find worth sharing here?

So far we know that it cost you only $12,000 that it has less than 200 horsepower.

Is there more?

Peter Blaise

Reminds me of the good old days as a kid raceing around. the inside of the car is nice it has read and black leather seats and shifter and sterring wheel. I do wish it had a little more oick up power. But once you get it going it gos. I am only getting about 21 to 22 miles per gallin of gas. I do how ever wish that the tank was bigger then 10 gallens. The car is really cute. And a lot of people look at it and say cool car. what is it. I just lol and say its a whoo... Over all the car is a very very good car for the money. I do have a (Q) I have about 600 miles on it and when I start slowing down the car shakes in the frount end. Tell me the roters cant be worped allready. Well my over all take on the car is it is 12,000 dollers well spent and will give me years of fun and enjoyment... My advice is every one should have one shoot maby two of them.
Thanks for you help.

... so, just because a local Daewoo Importer/Distributor is NOT included in the GM deal doesn't mean they are necessarily out of business or out of the picture. What is Daewoo US doing about their, and OUR, future?

Let's all get proactive! Tell 'em what we want!!!

Okay, my fellow US Daewoo Believers, why don't we all go to http://www.daewoocars.com/DLindex.asp and find one or more local (or distant) dealers and ask them directly (their email addresses are listed!) what are their plans to support us (and have access to our future dollars!)? Email broadcasts are easy, so why not hit ALL Daewoo US dealers?

We're here. We're Daewoo. Get used to it!

Hi Mugur Vasilie,

Thanks for asking, but I've never seen a Daewoo Cielo Gl (SOHC), so let's ask ALL the Yahoo! Daewoo groups, and maybe someone will help you out.

By the way, what does your local dealer say? Here in the US, dealers insert a suck pipe and pull out the old manual transmission oil and then squirt in new stuff - there are no drain taps anymore. For automatic transmissions, they drop the pan to drain it. How to check the level before transmission oil change time? Good question!

Also, Mugur, tell us if your car is an AUTO or MANUAL gearbox, okay? Join at http://groups.yahoo.com and search for "daewoo" and select one of the groups cc:'d in this email to join and connect with your fellow Daewoo enthusiasts, okay?

So, Yahoo! Daewoo gang:

Mugur Vasilie wants to know how to check the gearbox [presumably MANUAL shift] oil level in a Daewoo Cielo Gl (SOHC)?

Good luck,

Peter Blaise

PS - Mugur, how'd you find ME, and where in the world are you?

Hi S...,

I like Daewoo, sure, but not enough to buy yours! ;-)

Buy back? Who would want them and value them? See your original dealer if you think "back" is the operative word - your local (former) Daewoo dealer may have once had a sympathy ploy to give you a (fake) sizable trade in towards a new car they need to unload.

Resale wise, a Daewoo holds it's value as well as a Ford or Chevy pickup truck - did you know that?

Value wise, I'll keep mine until 100,000 miles has spun past, then consider the market at that time (any Subaru with all wheel drive with antilock brakes would get my vote today).

When you say "trying to deal with ...", is there more about that? What are you "trying to deal with"? Problems? Or "mere" worries"? Tell us more! I'll share this with a few Daewoo Yahoo! Groups (see the address list above) and you can check in there to see what they say!

Love and hugs,

Message:  Ok, I'm thinking about buying a 92 Festiva a guy just 2 houses up from me has. It's an auto, with only 99000 kms on the odometer. He's asking 1000 (Canadian) for it, it needs a battery and possibly some tires. I'm not sure what trim level it is, as it was painted once and I didn't see the badging, but I think it's a GL Sport because it's got the rear wiper and the little rooftop spoiler thing. Is $1000 a good price for this? Also, what kind of fuel mileage could I expect to get out of this car? I plan on keeping this thing, assuming I buy it, stock as much as possible and I'm hoping it will last me a few years.

Where is everybody from? I am at a complete loss, gents, to find myself a festiva that runs and possibly has a manual transmission.
It's been a sad story these past few weeks - I don't even see festivas on the road anymore.
I would seriously love to own a 90s model festiva, though, but no one in San Diego has listed anything.

If you know someone in the area or you have a lead, e-mail me. Or recommend me to anyone with a festiva that wants to sell for less than 1000.
Any suggestions?

Subject:  Greetings! New Member Here!
Message:  Hi, folks, just joined the group.

I am in sort of a situation. My 91 Hyundai Excel is broken. I took it to a shop and they are saying it needs a new engine. I hope they are wrong. You guys are experts, though. Could it be another problem?

I'll describe the details. It all started about two months ago. I was driving to work one night, and the engine just started to lose power. I was on the freeway, and within just a few minutes the speed decreased from 65 mph to about 20 mph, and it stayed there until I got off the freeway. No matter how hard I pushed the pedal to the floor.

I didn't have a AAA card, and I couldn't afford a tow truck, so I had to drive the thing all the way home (15 miles) in the condition it was in, on city streets, at midnight, to the far right of the road with the emergency flashers on the whole way. Getting up the inclines was a bitch, but I somehow managed, and once I got on level ground I managed to get it up to about 30 mph, and it never completely died.

The next day I changed the spark plugs. No dice. A few days later I changed the fuel filter. No dice. the car remained as screwed up as ever. I let the car sit there for a couple more weeks, and did nothing with it (couldn't afford to. I had to call in "break down" to work several times). Finally one day I just decided to bite the bullet and drive it around the block. I discovered that getting it going and making it through intersections after stopping was the hardest part, but once I got it to take off it really wasn't so bad. Within half a minute or so I could get up to maybe 25-30 mph and at one point I actually had it up to forty. It was obvious to me that it could never be a freeway vehicle again, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to drive it locally as long as I babied it, and I would have to avoid the hills.

Finally one day I decided to drive it to a local shop. The news wasn't good. The mechanics gave me a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo, much of which I couldn't understand and I have forgotten the details to. In short, they said, "You need a new engine. You'll be better off if you just find another car. And DON'T GET A HYUNDAI. They suck." They gave me a discount on the diagnostic, but that was the best news I got.

Driving the piece of crap home, I already knew that there sure as hell wasn't going to be any new engine. Then I just said to myself, "To hell with it. I'll ride the bus to school, and just keep driving this car locally until it finally breaks down completely," and that's exactly what I did. It lasted about another week, then one day when I was on my way home from a Taco Bell interview it just died at an intersection, and that was it. A cop stopped behind me and was nice enough to push me back into the parking lot with his cruiser. Fortunately I was only about two blocks from my house when this happened. Two nights later I had my dad push me home in my other vehicle, a 2000 Ford Ranger. No troubles for the most part, but now I can no longer open the hatch because it got dented in by the front end of my truck. No great loss. I suppose I can just get my stuff out of the back by pulling out the seats.

Like I said, they told me I need a new engine. In retrospect, though, this shop I took it too was actually a "Smog And Tune" shop. Maybe they didn't know what they were talking about. If what they said is true, however, the car is going to have to go to the junk yard, since there's no way I'm going to spend around $2,000.00 to have a new engine put in. This would really be a drag since I just bought the car back in October, and I had to go through a whole lot of trouble to it smogged, and street worthy, and acquire license plates and a pink slip for it. At least I never added it to my insurance policy.

Here's the problem. I have a second vehicle, the truck I mentioned earlier, but my dad needs it to go to and from work every day. So, I'm now stuck at home with nothing. Fortunately I work fairly close to home at a fast food restaurant during the week, but they are giving me piss poor hours. I also work on the weekends as a security guard, but I'm not getting good hours from THEM either, because accounts are few and far between and I can only work when I have access to the truck. Basically, between my two jobs I am not even getting forty hours a week. I'm getting about 30, and sometimes even less.

I hope and pray that there could just be something else wrong with the truck. Something simpler, and cheaper the fix then replacing the damn engine. I'm hoping I can get a second opinion.

What do you guys think? Is there an alternative? Could it be something else?

Thanks in advance,

Travis

I finally found it again! Which means I'm back. Wow, I almost forgot about the groups I started so long ago. I went off and started a few websites. One website I started a few days ago is about cars, http://www.carsandracingstuff.com

Two weeks after I bought it, the transmission had to be completely rebuilt and now i'm hearing some horrible noise in the back of the car, which im asking all the kia rio owners, do you hear the same thing?

It's only when I reach 50 mph and higher. It sounded like the muffler, but the dealership said all Kias are loud at certain speeds. Also, the steering wheel shakes SO bad once I hit 65, that I cant even really go fast on the highway.

The only good thing about the car for me is that its so small its easy to park and its GREAT on gas.

anyone have any comments for me on the vehicle and if you experience any of the noises, shakes I have with my car?

thanks!

Message:  Sorry to hear about your problems. As for the steering wheel shaking, your front wheels might be out of balance. Can't guess as to what the noise could be without hearing it, but if it only does it at certain speeds, then it's something to do with the wheels, rather than the engine. An engine noise would happen based on engine speed, and this is vehicle speed. Front wheel drive car, and noise coming from the rear...maybe wheel bearing? How many miles does the car have on it?

Subject:  The next 'GoKart'
Message:  Hello all...

The first 'GoKart' (as my youngest son dubbed it), was an '88 Ford Festiva that I bought for $500. I put two new pistons in it (one was scuffed, the other had a 1/2" chunk broken out of the top and was cracked)and a set of standard rings to fix the extreme oil blow-by issues it had. I was getting 42 mpg on the average before replacing the rings and pistons...but also having to add a quart of oil every 40 miles. On the bright side, NOBODY tailgated me. :=D

After my eldest son totaled the Festiva, I was without a little car again. Now, high gas prices give me the reason/excuse to buy another. I found a '91 Hyundai Excel 2dr Hatchback that was parked at 174k because the owner lost the dipstick while driving, along with much of her oil. So I'm looking at doing some major motor work, which doesn't scare me much, as I've worked on stuff for a while now. Best part is the price-we're still in the negotiating stage, but it will be below $200.

My question for the group is: where is a good place to get the right side window glass? It has been busted out.

Thanks!

My best guess would be an auto parts junkyard. The old Excels, sometimes they ran good and sometimes they died an early death. But glass doesn't rust, so you've got a good chance of finding it in good condition.

Some auto parts stores, I think NAPA does it, have a national parts database for finding rare stuff that isn't stocked in all stores.

Other than that, I'd say call an auto glass company and let them do the footwork. But it'll probably cost more than the rest of the car!

Good luck! What color is the car?

Talked to the seller, he is agreeable to a price of %150, so the deal should be done by Tuesday. I'm taking a tarp with me so on the way to work tonight, I can cover up the door with the broken window...we are expecting rain tonight, and really for the next few days.

Planning to go over Monday (my day off) and work on it a bit...look seriously at what needs to be done to get it going. I'll probably go ahead and rent a car trailer from U-haul to get it as I don't want to start it up before checking it over completely, but at the same time I don't want to leave it where it is lest any more damage be done to it.

Message:  I don't know...my guess would be the Kia Rio, based on some rebates I saw a while back. Everything else is new or just redesigned...the Aveo, Versa, Yaris, Accent.

Message:  Less like what? I test drove an aveo and kia, the aveo seem better built. What less does the kia have? Anyone know why the 4 door was redone and or why the 4 door svm is gone and or is the 5 door due for a redo. After rebates ect what should I pay for a white svm 5 door? I only seen like 2 whtie 5 door. Most are grey. I seen a few black and blue. But who wants black with no ac lol. When I get back from basic tranning I will get the recent college grad and military discounts lol. Anything else I should know about the aveo? After rebates is the aveo still the cheapest? THANK YOU!
