The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 replaced the Chevrolet SS, marking a return to NASCAR race cars being based on coupe street cars. For the previous several years NASCAR had been basing their race car coupe bodies on sedan-only street vehicles with the Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Impala, and Chevrolet SS.
