LAW ENFORCEMENT PUBLIC INFORMATION WORKSHOP
Public information and education programs conducted by law enforcement agencies vary widely across the country. Some agencies, particularly in larger cities and at the state level, have actively promoted public information and outreach, but many smaller agencies have not had the resources to develop effective proactive techniques. Often the police chief or sheriff may carry out these responsibilities in addition to many others.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed a 3-day workshop to enhance the role of public information in law enforcement. The goal of the Law Enforcement Public Information Workshop is to teach the skills needed to collaborate with the media, work with community organizations, and communicate messages as effectively as possible. The outcome is to conduct better public information programs.
The workshop is intended for public affairs officers, commanders, and law enforcement administrators who:
People from the following types of organizations will find the workshop helpful:
The Law Enforcement Public Information Workshop curriculum consists of an Administrator Guide, Instructor Manual, Reference Guide, Participant Workbook, and Videotape.
If you are interested in attending a scheduled workshop, or conducting the workshop in your own agency, contact your state Governor's Representative for Highway Safety or your NHTSA Regional Office. Addresses of the 10 NHTSA Regional Offices and the states they serve are on the next page.
