The Porsche 911 turns 50 this year. Porsche have released a number of iconic images, facts and details of what they plan to do to celebrate the 911.

The Porsche 911 is central to the Porsche marque. Over 820,000 have been sold over the past 50 years, making it the most successful sports car of all time. To celebrate the 911's half centenary they plan to take an original 911 from 1967 on a world tour. You'll be able to follow the progress of the tour here from the end of February.

The tour will take in such places as Pebble Beach CA, Shanghai, Goodwood, Paris and Australia and at fairs, historical rallies and motorsport events (and no doubt Le Mans given their works entry this year).

From 7 until 10 March the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart will house four special exhibits, an early-model 911 Turbo Coupé, a 911 Cabriolet study from 1981, a 1997 street version 911 GT1 and the pre-series Type 754 T7.

Over the course of the rest of the year the Porsche Museum will put on special events and exhibits celebrating the 911.

We'll publish a separate article which will detail a full historical run-down of the development of the 911 from 1963 until the present day.

The only thing missing from Porsche's celebrations is any announcement of a Special Edition Porsche. No doubt this will be come in the near future.
