Colombian Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya has won the pole for Sunday's running of the German Grand Prix race at Hockenheim.

Montoya piloted his Williams BMW around the 4.5 kilometer Hockenheimring circuit in 1:15.17 minutes for an average speed of more than 219 kilometers per hour.

Teammate Ralf Schumacher was second fastest while Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello had the third-best qualifying time. Renault's Jarno Trulli was fourth with McLaren Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen of Finland fifth.

Five-time driving champion Michael Schumacher of Germany was sixth. Schumacher leads Raikkonen by seven points in the overall drivers standings.

NASCAR stock car driver Kevin Harvick set an Indianapolis Motor Speedway track record Saturday in winning the pole for the Brickyard 400.

Harvick turned a lap of 296.607 kph on the historic 4-kilometer oval in his Chevrolet. He bumped Indiana native Ryan Newman off the pole minutes after Newman set the track record with a lap of 296.438 kph.

Both drivers beat the record of 294.382 kph set by Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart last season.

Stewart, still looking for his first victory on his home track, qualified 15th. Winston Cup points leader Matt Kenseth qualified 17th and three-time race winner Jeff Gordon was 19th.
