Person Dies After Border Patrol Checkpoint Shooting Near Las Cruces

The individual involved in a shooting at the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on I-25 near Las Cruces, N.M., last month has died.

The adult, who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was not struck by agents, died at a local hospital on Friday, May 5, 2017.

The individual approached the primary inspection lane at the checkpoint on April 9, 2017, and was referred to a secondary inspection.

Agents said they heard a gunshot and fired their weapons.

No agents were hurt.

The incident is being investigated by the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility.

The FBI El Paso Division Evidence Response Team assisted.

The individual will not be identified because no charges were filed.
