Motorsport's world governing body has given Bahrain a May 1 deadline to decide whether it will be possible to reschedule its canceled Grand Prix for later this year.

The International Automobile Federation's World Motor Sport Council announced its decision after meeting in Paris on Tuesday. The race was originally scheduled to open the Formula One season on March 13. But it was canceled last month by Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa after anti-government protests in the country.

Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone says he would like to reschedule the race in the latter stages of the season if the political situation permits. The final Grand Prix of the season will be held in Brazil on November 27,

The Formula One season will now open with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 27.
