Biography

The following section is an from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Terry Shelton serves as Associate Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), where she is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating national motor vehicle traffic crash data. NHTSA is a data-driven agency, and Ms. Shelton’s role in NCSA is critical in providing direction on major policy and program decisions and regulatory activities.

Ms. Shelton assumed the role of Acting Executive Director of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in January 2017. With a long career dedicated to traffic safety, she is honored by the opportunity to further NHTSA’s core safety mission of saving lives, preventing injuries, and reducing crashes. Before becoming NHTSA’s Acting Executive Director, Ms. Shelton served as NHTSA’s Acting Deputy Administrator for NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA).

Ms. Shelton has held numerous leadership positions throughout her 31-year career at DOT, including Associate Administrator for Research and Information Technology, and Chief Information Officer of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Previous roles at FMCSA included Acting Chief Safety Officer, Acting Associate Administrator for Administration, and Director of the Office of Information Management. Ms. Shelton also served as Acting Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics at the Research and Innovative Technology Administration. She began her DOT career serving 10 years as a mathematical statistician at NHTSA’s NCSA. She is the recipient of numerous Secretary’s Awards and the Senior Executive Service Meritorious Presidential Rank Award. Prior to coming to DOT, Shelton worked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor.

Ms. Shelton has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Delaware.
