The 2001 NASCAR season would be defined by the tragic loss of Dale Earnhardt on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.  His son, Dale Jr., would carry on through the season without his father and the eyes of the racing world upon him while an up-and-coming Kevin Harvick would suddenly be asked to step into the legendary Earnhardt's seat and race with his crew for the season.  His drive, not only running both the full Busch Grand National schedule and the full Winston Cup schedule (minus the Daytona 500) but also winning the Busch Grand National Championship while being Winston Cup Rookie of the Year at the same time began a decade-long era in which full-time Cup competitors also raced for championships in NASCAR's second-level series.

A bright spot lost in the tragedy of Earnhardt's death was the triumph of Michael Waltrip.  Close to having finished his Winston Cup career with 15 winless seasons, he was given what was seen at the time as one last shot at success with a Dale Earnhardt, Inc. car and scored his first victory in his 463rd Cup start at the Daytona 500.
