Founded: 1 April 1967
Mission Statement: Serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible, and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future.

The cabinet-level agency of the United States government responsible for transportation to, from, and within the United States.

Most responsibilities are divided out into departments. The following divisions have their own separate sections in The Crittenden Automotive Library due to the large volume of information created:
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for highway construction and safety.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for the safety of trucking and buses.
Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for public transportation bus systems.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the safety of cars and light trucks.
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigates bus accidents.

The following departments of the USDOT do not have their own separate Crittenden Library sections but may also occasionally fall within our scope. Information from them is found in this USDOT section:
Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for the safety of rail travel. Also includes rail-highway grade crossings.
Office of Inspector General (OIG) for investigating crimes relating to USDOT divisions.
Office of the Secretary of Transportation (OST)
Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulates transfer of hazardous materials including in trucks.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) handles anti-terrorism security, transferred to Department of Homeland Security in 2003.
United States Coast Guard (USCG) handles security for major events on or near bodies of water, transferred to Department of Homeland Security in 2003.

The following are the rest of the departments of the USDOT for reference:
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Maritime Administration (MARAD)
Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC)

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) was spun off into its own independent agency in 2015.

History

The following section is an excerpt from Wikipedia's United States Department of Transportation page on 29 March 2017, text available via the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

Prior to the Department of Transportation, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Transportation administered the functions now associated with the DOT. In 1965, Najeeb Halaby, administrator of the Federal Aviation Agency – the future Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) – suggested to U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson that transportation be elevated to a cabinet-level post, and that the FAA be folded into the DOT.
