Former Winston Cup driver between 1980 and 1989. In that short career he accumulated 14 poles and 13 wins in 195 starts. He was also Rookie of the Race in the 1980 Indianapolis 500.
His career ended in 1987 because he did not want to take a physical that he knew would show that he had AIDS. Without the physical, NASCAR did not give him medical clearance to race. His final race was the Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan International Speedway where he finished 29th after an engine failure. Tim Richmond died of reasons relating to AIDS in 1989.
In 2009 the ARCA RE/MAX Series ran a race called the Tim Richmond Memorial ARCA RE/MAX 200 at Mansfield Motorsports Park.
