Kannapolis Intimidators
A baseball franchise moved to Kannapolis, North Carolina in 1995, becoming the Piedmont Phillies for the 1995 season and the Piedmont Boll Weevils (Kannapolis was a cotton textile town) for 1996-2000.
Kannapolis was also the hometown of baseball fan and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, who bought a share in team ownership after the 2000 season. It was from then on that the baseball franchise would share Dale's nickname and become the Intimidators, as well as sharing his most famous colors, black with a thin red border stripe.
Dale Earnhardt died at the 2001 Daytona 500, before the Intimidators would take the field. The number 3 was officially retired in 2002.
Famous stock car racing artist Sam Bass designed the team's logo.
They are currently a Class-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

Basketball
The Indiana Pacers (Indianapolis 500) and Detroit Pistons (auto industry) have names that can be traced back to automotive influences.
The National Industrial Basketball League (NIBL) existed from 1947-1963, and consisted of teams sponsored by industrial companies and consisted of their employees. Teams with automotive themes included the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots, Bartlesville Phillips 66ers, Denver Chevvies, Denver D-C Truckers, San Francisco Stewart Chevrolets. The Denver Truckers and Akron Wingfoots names would survive as NABL teams into the 2000s.
A road sign reading "Maynard 8 Miles" is the poster image and source of the title of the 2017 film by that name.

Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings really are a topic worthy of a website of their own, but here is just a little bit of their history and its relation to the automobile...
The Red Wings are considered an "Original Six" team in the National Hockey League" (NHL), meaning they were one if the six teams that have survived from the 1920's through the league contraction that left just these six teams in operation from 1942-1967.
The team was originally formed in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars, becoming the Falcons in the 1930 offseason, and finally the Red Wings on October 5, 1932 after James E. Norris bought the team.
Norris was a member of the original Stanley Cup-winning team in 1893, predating both the NHL and the Benz Patent Motor Wagen. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) "Winged Wheelers" were known for their logo of a bicycle wheel with thin wings spreading upward from each side, and this became Norris' inspiration for the Red Wings logo, which would be an automobile spoke wheel to represent the "Motor City" with a pair of wings set off to the right side of the emblem, one behind the other.
The logo would last just two seasons before being tweaked, redrawing the wheel and wings and essentially reversing the red and white of the original. It would then undergo a "streamlining" in 1948, and has stayed the same ever since.
The "Winged Wheel," as the logo has come to be known, has adorned the Stanley Cup Champion-winning team 11 times, over 12% of the times it has been awarded since the formation of the NHL or the team.
